Mental health support at home in Mauritius
Some things are harder to say in a waiting room. A consultation at home takes the journey, the reception desk and the other people in the room out of it, which for a lot of patients is the difference between talking and not talking at all.
A doctor, not a stranger with a clipboard
The counselling is done by our own doctors, who have trained in counselling alongside their medical practice. That matters more than it sounds. They can take a history, look at what medication you are on, notice when something physical is driving how you feel, and refer you on when a specialist is the right answer. You are not starting again with someone who has never met you.
What a session is
A session runs up to an hour, at your address, between 10am and 4pm, at a time arranged with our coordinator. It is a conversation, not a form. The doctor will ask what has been happening, how long it has been going on, how you are sleeping and eating, and what you want to be different. Nothing is written down anywhere your family can read it.
A session is Rs 3,000.
What people come with
Stress that has stopped being manageable. Anxiety that has started to affect sleep, work or appetite. Low mood that has lasted longer than it should. Grief. The strain of caring for a parent or a child who is unwell. Some people come once, to put something into words and get a plan. Others come every few weeks for a while. Both are normal.
When one conversation is not the right answer
Some things need a hospital, not a home visit. Call SAMU on 114, or go straight to the nearest emergency department, if you or someone you are with is in immediate danger, is thinking about ending their life, or has already harmed themselves. That is not a call to be embarrassed about making, and it is the right one.
For everything short of that, a doctor sitting in your own front room is usually the calmer place to start.
Arranging one
Call the hotline on 52 52 22 34 and say you would like a counselling session. The coordinator will arrange a time rather than send someone straight away, because this is one of the few things we do that works better planned than urgent.
